Capturing the Electronic Pulse of Public Opinion: The Google Trends above are reflective of the reality that our public opinion can be measured much more quickly and much more readily via close examinations of Internet traffic. The graph depicts the “Interest” around the world in the following search terms related to current events: NRA, Gun Control, Fiscal Cliff, and Syria from January 2010 to December 2012. This underscores how important Internet traffic in general, and in particular, social media, can be in assessing immediate public sentiment on issues as diverse as the national economy and breathtaking tragedy. It will be interesting to see how sustained public interest is in key issues beyond the immediacy of the news event.
